POLICE Local woman killed when car strikes trees A Wednesday afternoon car wreck left a Columbus woman dead, authorities say. Carmen M. Nopal, 29, of 4321 Harrison lost control of her 1996 Mercury Sable as she was driving east around 2:30 p.m. near 6660 Standing Boy Road, said Muscogee County Coroner Bill Thrower and Columbus Police Lt. Renee McAneny.
The car traveled sideways, hitting a tree on its left side before spinning counter-clockwise and hitting other trees. "She was dead upon arrival," McAneny said. "Damage was extensive." Nopal had her seat belt on and both air bags had deployed, McAneny said. It isn't known why Nopal lost control of the car. Thrower said the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head and torso.
