This comedy series depicts middle school as it really happened. Comics Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle play versions of themselves as teenage outcasts in the year 2000, during a time when the best day of your life can turn into the worst with the stroke of a gel pen. Adult Maya and Anna -- as their younger selves -- are surrounded by actual teenagers as they re-experience some of the ups and downs of middle school life. They get a lot of unexpected attention on the first day of school and later face the temptation to do drugs. Read More Read Less

Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/12/23 Full Review Matthew F Hilarious and heartfelt show about two outcast teenage girls that depend on each other to stay sane in the crazy world that is adolescence. It's so much silly fun. The disinformation they have about sex education and life in general is put at the center of the comedy. You can laugh hard at you are because we've all been there. Hound, insecure, and uniformed…. But just wanting to be accepted and loved. So much fun with a heartfelt chewy center. A must show. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/08/23 Full Review Gareth v Original, honest, disturbing, touching, hilarious but it's ability to be relatable is it's greatest strength. Is PEN15 appropriate for 11 year olds? ›

Have been watching with my 11 yo daughter . Some of the content is mature and uncomfortable but has been a great way to talk about stuff that is sure to be on my kiddos mind. Maya and Anna make some awful mistakes about friendships and popularity and boys, and these are all learning moments.

Is it mayas real mom in PEN15? ›

Generally considered one of the smartest characters on PEN15, Yuki Ishii-Peters is Maya's mom and was played by Maya Erskin's real-life, Mutsuko Erskine. Though PEN15 is the elder Erskine's only credit thus far, she gives a naturalistic performance that only helps make her interactions with Maya all the more real.

Are the girls in PEN15 supposed to look old? ›

Erskine and Konkle are both 33 years old — an age that's a little too old, even in Hollywood, to be playing young teens. And although they're styled in middle-school-appropriate ways, the show makes absolutely no effort to conceal the actresses' ages; in fact, their adulthood is a key part of the show's quirky concept.

How old are they meant to be in PEN15? ›

Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle understand that better than anyone else in Hollywood. That's why their Hulu series "PEN15," which features the 33-year-old actors as 13-year-old misfits who crave popularity more than perfect grades, is more grueling — and more relatable — than any season of "Survivor."

How much of PEN15 is true? ›

ERSKINE: I would say 70 percent to 80 percent. It all stems from something that has happened. The last season, it's less so, but the first season was pretty autobiographical. The other thing is, me and Anna weren't friends in middle school.

Do Shuji and Maya have the same dad? ›

In Sleepover, Maya reveals that Fred is not Shuji's biological father, saying that Shuji is her half brother, "but we're basically full." As a bit of trivia, Maya Erskine's father, Peter Erskine, is a professional jazz drummer who has played with many famous musicians/bands including Weather Report and Michael Bublé.
