The warmest temperatures were over the West, with departures of 3-6 degrees above normal widespread, and from Washington to California, with departures 9-12 degrees above normal. The coolest temperatures were also associated with areas that picked up the best rains as temperatures from Texas into Arkansas and Missouri were up to 3 degrees below normal. Visualization of radar rainfall estimates across the entire state of Oklahoma was conducted using a comparative analysis of one-year time intervals from 1995 to 2018. The data utilized in this visualization was obtained from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). To facilitate quick identification of areas with below or above normal annual rainfall, a 30-year normal precipitation dataset was also incorporated. In this dataset, the color red indicates precipitation below the 30-year average, while the color blue represents precipitation above the average. The 30-year dataset, sourced from the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI), is included as gray and labeled as "30 Year Average". The height or elevation in the above 25 independent interactive 3D models corresponds to the amount of rainfall in inches. Four horizontal county grids, divided into 20-inch intervals, serve as scales that can be selectively enabled or disabled. Each 3D map represents a specific year in Oklahoma and can be interactively explored. Since the dataset spans the years 1995 to 2018, it is considered a 4D dataset due to its temporal dimension. The radar rainfall estimates originated from NOAA and encompassed the entire state of Oklahoma, sourced from the Arkansas-Red Basin River Forecast Center (ARBRFC). Abstract A statistical objective analysis (SOA) scheme is used to reanalyze the stage III estimate of rainfall, an hourly mosaic of digital precipitation arrays produced by a network of WSR-88Ds. The technique also uses rainfall measurements from the Oklahoma Mesonetwork that are taken over the Lake Altus area in southwest Oklahoma. The Lake Altus area is monitored by four WSR-88D radars: Frederick, Oklahoma; Twin Lakes, Oklahoma; Amarillo, Texas; and Lubbock, Texas. A total of 185 hourly maps of precipitation accumulation between June 1995 and July 1996 are used in the reanalysis. The results indicate that the stage III analysis underestimates total rainfall accumulations by as much as 40% when compared to the SOA reanalysis. Furthermore, the largest discrepancies between the stage III analysis and the SOA reanalysis coincide with overlapping areas of coverage between WSR-88D umbrellas. Some stage III precipitation fields used in this study clearly show fictitious high gradients of rainfall that exactly coincide with the maximum range ring of adjacent WSR-88Ds. Currently, stage II precipitation fields are mosaicked by averaging nonzero rainfall accumulations, regardless of their respective distance from a WSR-88D, to generate the stage III analysis. It is shown that wherever WSR-88D surveillance areas overlap, analysis errors, introduced solely by the radar-range effect, will adversely affect the accuracy of the stage III estimate.
