Orr, whose 16.1 points per game last season made her the Lady Tigers' leading scorer, underwent knee surgery in April to scrape tendons in her right knee. She had developed a severe case of patella tendonitis that hampered her the past two seasons and shortened her playing time last year. Auburn women's coach assistant coach Joanie O'Brien said Monday that Orr wasn't ready physically. Now, both men are still thinking football, but in positions of dramatically lesser profile. Sharpe, who spent the last seven years as the head coach and athletic director at Jordan High, will serve as an assistant at Spencer. Biddle, who held a similar position for the last three years at Glenwood, now is head coach at Wacoochee Junior High in Smiths, Ala. Sharpe, 46, has spent 21 of his first 25 years in coaching as a head coach.
Only four years two each at Pacelli and Carver were spent as an assistant. But he said he isn't having any difficulty adjusting. "It's great. You don't have to run and check all that paperwork," said Sharpe. "You don't always have to be the first one at practice.
I'm having fun." Still, Sharpe said he hasn't ruled out a return to head coaching in the future. He'll coach offensive backs at Spencer this fall. "I'm just going to get through this year and see how it turns out, said Sharpe. "Right now, I'm well satisfied doing this." The Auburn coaching staff will start with the basics this morning when the freshman class has its first preseason practice. "We're going to be teaching them how to line up," said defensive coordinator Wayne Hall. The freshmen will not be exposed to contact drills until next week when the varsity players have reported. Until then, there will be few opportunities to coach anything but the basics. "We'll have a little bit of team drills, but mostly it will be by positions," Hall said.
AUBURN NOTES The freshmen had physicals Tuesday and were tested for speed and strength. Running back Henry Love of Douglasville, posted the fastest time in the 40-yard dash, though the actual times were not released. Love won the region 100- and 200-meter events in track as a junior at Lithia Springs High School, but he suffered a broken leg in the third game of his senior season. While the Auburn coaches were no doubt glad to see Love has recovered from his injury, Hall said little can be gained from the tests. "It doesn't make any difference now," he said.
Though the varsity players don't officially report for fall practice until Friday, many of the players already are on campus for summer school. Auburn reports that 51 players are enrolled in summer school, which ends next week. While some players may need the summer credits to retain their eligibility, most of theplayers volunteered for the extra classes. According to Auburn's academic support staff, between 30 and 40 of the players are in summer school to get ahead on their course take special courses or to work out on their own prior to the start of practice.
